In *Het heden van het koloniaal verleden* zijn de koloniale sporen in Brussel - in de vorm van standbeelden, pleinen, straatnamen, monumenten, gebouwen en instellingen - het vertrekpunt van waaruit auteur Nicholas Lewis de Belgische kolonisatie van Congo in duikt. Aan de hand van een kritische analyse van de echte betekenis die achter de blijvende aanwezigheid van deze koloniale tekens schuilgaat, toont hij aan hoe België een fundamenteel racistisch land blijft, in niet geringe mate ook als gevolg van decennia van koloniaal bedrog en ontkenning. In het boek komen met name de gemeentes Etterbeek, Elsene en Schaarbeek aan bod, naast de buurten van het Koningsplein en het Jubelpark. De auteur zet vraagtekens bij de ruimte die in het Brusselse openbare domein wordt verleend aan dieven, folteraars, kidnappers, verminkers en moordenaars uit de koloniale tijd, en bij de gemanipuleerde narratieven die aan de basis liggen van hun verheerlijking. Het boek omvat ook een volledig hoofdstuk over het controversiële AfricaMuseum in Tervuren, en essays en artistieke interventies van de doorgewinterde dekoloniale en antiracisme experts Laura Nsengiyumva, Véronique Clette-Gakuba, Georgine Dibua Mbombo, François Makanga en Anne Wetsi Mpoma. Zo zet *Het heden van het koloniaal verleden* de slopende impact in de verf die de kolonisatie nog altijd heeft op elke laag van de hedendaagse Belgische maatschappij.

Although race—a concept of human difference that establishes hierarchies of power and domination—has played a critical role in the development of modern architectural discourse and practice since the Enlightenment, its influence on the discipline remains largely underexplored. This volume offers a welcome and long-awaited intervention for the field by shining a spotlight on constructions of race and their impact on architecture and theory in Europe and North America and across various global contexts since the eighteenth century. Challenging us to write race back into architectural history, contributors confront how racial thinking has intimately shaped some of the key concepts of modern architecture and culture over time, including freedom, revolution, character, national and indigenous style, progress, hybridity, climate, representation, and radicalism. By analyzing how architecture has intersected with histories of slavery, colonialism, and inequality—from eighteenth-century neoclassical governmental buildings to present-day housing projects for immigrants—Race and Modern Architecture challenges, complicates, and revises the standard association of modern architecture with a universal project of emancipation and progress.
